Our Red String is a branching visual novel from Eva Kiss centered on two protagonists, Lena and Ian, whose lives cross while both are trying to recover from difficult breakups and figure out what they want from their futures. Rather than following a single character, the story regularly shifts perspective between Lena and Ian, allowing players to influence both sides of an increasingly interconnected web of friendships, careers, attractions, and relationships.
Player choice sits at the center of Our Red String. Decisions can alter friendships, romances, personal ambitions, and how Lena and Ian view the people around them. Choices made from one protagonist's perspective can also create consequences that become apparent when the story switches to the other, giving the two intertwined narratives considerably more complexity than a conventional linear visual novel.
Character progression also plays a role in how conversations and situations unfold. Lena and Ian develop four primary attributes—Wits, Charisma, Athleticism, and Lust—which can unlock different dialogue options and approaches to important situations. Money and Will provide additional resources to manage, adding a light progression system to the otherwise narrative-focused experience.
Relationships are not restricted to a single predetermined path. The story can develop in dramatically different directions depending on how the player handles attraction, loyalty, temptation, friendships, and personal goals. This branching structure encourages multiple playthroughs, since different combinations of decisions and character attributes can reveal scenes and story developments that are unavailable on other routes.
